Chapter Sixteen

Zeus sent the wrong daughter.

Galen’s grip tightened around his goblet as he watched the younger king pandering to the plain elemental girl the Storm King felt he could substitute for her shy beauty of a sister. Mnemosyne’s daughter, indeed. The air elemental and her gaggle of girls had not even been present at the selection. Zeus had deemed one of the unwanted girls, whom he did not even trouble himself with bringing to Belus for Galen’s inspection, to be a suitable match for the younger king of Chaon. And when Aretas demanded to know of her mother, how would he react to the truth?

Her mother was, in a word, unremarkable. Mnemosyne, like so many of Zeus’ concubines, had been a minor ruler of a small clan of elementals whose wealth relied on the raising and training of pegasi. The winged horses were only tamed on the isolated mountain of Helikon under the care of Mnemosyne and her nine daughters. They were far from Zeus’ court at Belus and from Queen Hera’s ire. A choice Zeus allowed because none of them were strong in their element, and he cared very little for the weaklings among his children though he had not gone so far as to follow his father and grandfather’s tradition of culling all the children whose powers were stunted. Mostly because he enjoyed boasting of his plethora of children.

The Storm King had agreed to his choice of Helen. Young and malleable with a dangerous fiery gift he could easily shape into an unfortunate accident at the perfect moment, she had been his choice. This . . . trick of the Storm King’s threatened not only his immediate plans but also several of the plans he had been seeding with such care.

Galen raised his goblet in mute acknowledgement of a noble’s drunken salute. However, he refused to slow and speak with the man. The only people he wished to speak to had just slipped into a less crowded area in the shadow of a column. Artemis raised an eyebrow at his approach. “Merchant Advisor Galen. You’ve risen high since you were last in Belus. I suppose you feel yourself most favored by your gods.”

His lips curved into a false smile as he raised his goblet once more in a perceived salute. “My dear Lady Artemis, I have always believed the gods reward those who hunt down the opportunities provided. Anything less and one can only blame oneself for not taking advantage when the time is right.”

“And no one could accuse you of lacking the will to complement your ambitions,” Apollo muttered, his gaze on the celebration even as he took a deep swig of his drink. The feigned disinterest in their conversation was not enough to fool him, however. He knew the sunlight elemental would react strongly to any perceived insult toward his twin.

Of course, they were both known to detest duplicity more than most. Something to do with their mother’s tale according to his spies. Presenting a false front to them would not work in his favor.
